1.Bossa Novas by Eliane Elias
Bossa Nova is one of the most suitable music for summer breeze and this
week Mr.Kondo introduces us "Dreamer" by Eliane Elias as a beautiful Bosasa Nova
singer and pianist in Brazil. Followings are the message from Mr. Kondo:
I have Elias's albums , "Illusions" and "Sings Jobin".
Most titles of her albums have image of summer. Elias does not have outstanding
talent for singing, but she has a great sense of rhythm and phrase of Bossa nova.
It makes her one of the popular Bossa Nova singer.
"Dreamer" is an excellent album that Elias's husky vocals and saxphone by
Michael Brecker's make great performance with the subtle string orchestration.
You will feel happy and relaxed to listen to it.
2.Cappuccino's Jazz Live Concert Report
I went to "Jazz On Top" on July 30. I arrived there one hour before because I really
looked forward to the organ concert. I found several audiences were seated already.
Title of the concert is "Akiko Tsuruga Organ Trio" and they usually perform their live in NY .
Drums is Grady Tate, Guitor is Satoshi Inoue. Their first album "Harem Dreams" was released in May.
Hammond Organ B-3 was set in center of the stage. They performed several musics
in their album "Harem Dreams".
"KIKO" was a blues at a light tempo composed by Grady Tate . Their performance
sounded like chatting delightfully. In "Green Sleeves" the warm tone of organ harmonized
very well with guitor and it was a great performance.
Grady Tate sang "My funny valentine" and his sweet and romantic voice was
so fantastic.
I like both organ and drum. Last November I went to the live concert by Lou Donaldson(Sax)
Quartet in Village Vanguard in NY. Organ performance by Lonnie Smith was funky and I really
enjoyed their live. Akiko Tsuruga was apprenticed to Lonnie Smith.
Grady Tate made a great performance at Jazz Street at Takatsuki in May and audiences
were charmed by his seductive vocal and drums.
They played fanky. Jazzy, soulful, blues, Latain, Bossa Novas, Classic musics with wide
range. I really enjoyed the warm tone of organ by Akiko Tsuruga and felt gentle hospitality
by members. Their performance provided an atmosphere of Jazz Club in NY.
Keiko Tsuruga is going to appear a documentary movie of Hmmond Organ B-3.
I finally decided to make amplifier's chassis by copper plate
and looked around several shops in Akihabara. I found that the processing
cost for chassis might be around JPY 50,000 , so I tried to make it by myself
as much as I could in order to reduce the cost. It was difficult for me to
process hole for plug and transformer. Then I asked Tokyu Hands(DIY Shop)
to process it. If I make the frame by wood, it would totally cost less than JPY 10,000
including processing cost and copper plate and it might be reasonable.
Therefore, I spent the balance to buy transformer and tubes.
I bought an output transformer manufacturered by Hashimoto but I could not
find appropriate ready-made power transformer . I found the shop for made-to-order
in Akihabara and asked them to make original one. They said that it would take two
weeks to make it. I really looked forward to get it.
As to tube, I bought RCA and SILVANIA. I looked around many shops to find
suitable register. I asked my friend ,"Which manufacturer's condenser
might be better?" "Bita Q might be the best" he said, however, it was
really difficult to find. I might walk around Akihabara to find all parts and
it will take several days.
To be continued.
